The roots of the Catholic faith in Baltimore run deeply through the city, but its history is only partially told if it doesn?t include African-American Catholics.
Diane Batts Morrow, an expert in African studies at the University of Georgia, will discuss Baltimore’s black Catholics who challenged the Catholic institution to rise above racism and bigotry, said Ed Plocha, parishioner of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Baltimore, where Morrow will speak.
“Throughout history, black Catholics encountered support and acceptance as well as discrimination and rejection within the church,” Plocha said.
Black Catholics can trace their struggles and successes in Baltimore through church documents to the late 1700s.
The lecture, “African American Catholics in Baltimore: A Proud Historical Tradition” is at 7:30 p.m. Monday at 740 N. Calvert St. A reception will follow the lecture. For more information, call 410-727-3848.
