Labor Secretary Perez to speak in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez is to focus on the importance of manufacturing apprenticeships in a visit to Chicago.

Perez is scheduled to speak Thursday at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. The talk is part of a series of six industry discussions focused on expanding apprenticeships. Perez’s office says he’ll talk about a $100 million American Apprenticeship Grant competition to be released later this fall.

The labor secretary’s office calls apprenticeships a “tried-and-true” way to develop workers in the construction industry. The department says apprenticeships can help the nation’s fastest-growing industries.
