Woman fined $1K after nearly climbing all the way up Mount Rushmore

A Nebraska woman was fined $1,000 after illegally climbing up Mount Rushmore National Memorial on Friday.

Barefoot and without a rope, Alexandria Incontro got about 15 feet from the top of the sculpture in South Dakota, climbing between the faces of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

A federal officer and park ranger arrived on the scene after visitors spotted Incontro ascending the 5,725-foot granite mountain in the early evening. After talking with the ranger, Incontro climbed down and was arrested, according to Rapid City Journal. Keystone Ambulance medics found Incontro had sustained some scrapes from her venture.

Incontro, who was visiting Mount Rushmore with family, including her two children, pleaded guilty in federal court in Rapid City on Monday. She was given a $1,000 fine and $30 court fee, federal court records show. Prosecutors dropped the other charges she faced, including trespassing on property not open to the public, violating a closure of public use limit, and failure to obey a lawful order.

This is not the first time someone has climbed the popular tourist attraction, but Maureen McGee-Ballinger, a spokeswoman for Mount Rushmore, declined to tell the outlet whether it is the highest anyone has ever climbed there.
