Trump: We will ‘know soon’ whether North Korea denuclearization deal is possible

President Trump said hours ahead of his historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that the U.S. will “know soon” whether or not a deal with Pyongyang on denuclearization is possible.

“Meetings between staffs and representatives are going well and quickly….but in the end, that doesn’t matter. We will all know soon whether or not a real deal, unlike those of the past, can happen!” Trump tweeted from Singapore just before 5:30 a.m. local time.

The president is scheduled to meet with Kim at 9 a.m. at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island. The two will first participate in a one-on-one bilateral meeting, each accompanied by a translator, before they are joined by U.S. and North Korean officials for an expanded bilateral meeting.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, White House chief of staff John Kelly, and national security adviser John Bolton are expected to attend the expanded bilateral meeting with Trump and Kim.

The president said Saturday he expects to know “within the first minute” of meeting Kim whether the summit will be a success.
