The Kentucky Derby at the Red Derby, Saturday It’s that time of year to break out elaborate headwear and guzzle mint juleps by the glassful.
Kentucky Derby time, to be more precise.
This Saturday marks the 137th Kentucky Derby, one of the great horse races and the first leg of the Triple Crown. To celebrate, the Red Derby in D.C. is hosting it’s Derby and the Derby party.
“The idea is to get the vibe of the Derby as if you were in Kentucky,” said Red Derby co-owner Sasha Carter. “Everyone gets into it.”
Starting at 11, the Red Derby will host a brunch, complete with $2 mimosas, Bloody Marys and Harvey Wallbangers; and, yes, $5 mint juleps. The race is scheduled to start around 6 p.m. and will be shown on a big screen. The bar will also serve something they call Derby Pie for dessert.
“Even if you don’t like sports, you can watch the last two minutes of the game and it will still be exciting to you,” Carter said. “It’s the adrenaline rush of who is going to win.”
Carter encourages patrons to where a big hat, in the tradition of the Kentucky Derby.
“It’s like going to a Halloween party,” she said.
When: Brunch starts at 11 a.m., race is at 6 p.m.
