Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will appear before a joint Senate Judiciary and Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation committee hearing on April 10.
The hearing will take place in the visitor center at the U.S. Capitol at 2:15 p.m.
“With all of the data exchanged over Facebook and other platforms, users deserve to know how their information is shared and secured. This hearing will explore approaches to privacy that satisfy consumer expectations while encouraging innovation,” Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said in a statement.
The Tuesday hearing is titled “Facebook, Social Media Privacy, and the Use and Abuse of Data” and comes on the heels the House Energy and Commerce Committee announcing Zuckerberg will testify the following morning, April 11, at 10 a.m.
This will be Zuckerberg’s first appearance before Congress following the backlash the social media giant has faced over a data breach that affected millions of Facebook users.
Facebook said earlier in the day Wednesday that personal data from as many as 87 million users was improperly shared with British political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, after originally estimating that 50 million people were affected.
It was originally reported that the information of more than 50 million users improperly wound up in the hands of the firm that worked with President Trump’s 2016 campaign.
Facebook has also faced scrutiny for how its platform was used by foreign governments, specifically Russian actors, to influence the 2016 presidential election.
