A new health initiative to promote heart health awareness for minorities was announced Thursday by Mayor Sheila Dixon. Joined by Rep. Elijah Cummings and state Del. Shirley Nathan-Pulliam, Dixon said the Baltimore City Health Department would work to give more information to the public about heart disease.
“Unfortunately, there remains a wide gulf and disparity between the current health needs of minorities and people of color and the availability of affordable and thorough health care,” Dixon spokesman Anthony McCarthy said.
Dixon said the city will work with the federal government and the city Health Department to create a heart health awareness campaign to promote exercise and better eating habits.
