Vice President Joe Biden promised Wednesday not to threaten to beat up Donald Trump during a campaign rally for Hillary Clinton in Tampa, Fla., but did accuse Trump of proposing “un-American” ideas.
“I’m going to be good. I’m not going to talk about gymnasiums,” Biden joked with the crowd, referring to his famous threat to take Trump “out behind the gym” for his lewd comments about women.
“The thing that bothers me most is the way he denigrates people,” Biden said about the Republican nominee’s derisive remarks about Muslims, Latinos and some women. “What kind of mind” wakes up at 3:30 a.m. to say mean things about a former Miss Universe? Biden asked, referring to tweets Trump posted about former beauty queen Alicia Machado.
During a presidential debate Trump defended stiffing some contractors who worked on his hotels and other real estate projects by saying that maybe he didn’t like the quality of their work. Biden jumped on that remark, saying to Trump, “Maybe I don’t like the quality of what you say. Maybe I don’t like the quality of who you are.”
Biden categorized most of Trump’s remarks as un-American.
“In a generic sense, it’s un-American … the vitriol” Trump has injected into the campaign is unpatriotic, Biden charged.
“This is a total appeal to our darker side,” Biden said.
Biden said the Democratic nominee is the only one who cares about working people and advancing the country.
“I know some of the people listening are mad at Hillary,” Biden admitted, possibly referring to her email controversy. “Well let me tell you something about Hillary, Hillary devoted her whole life to making sure women and children have an even shot, even when it cost her politically.”
