“We are currently working an active situation in Midtown. Preliminary information indicates three people have been shot,” the police department said. “We are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shootings.”

Police released a photo of the suspect and said the last shots appear to have been fired around 2:15 p.m. local time. Police did not immediately disclose where the suspect was detained. Posts to social media indicate it occurred near Atlanta’s main airport, though that has not been confirmed by authorities.

Police have not shared a suspected motive for the attack.

The shootings took place at 1280 W. Peachtree Street, where two of the victims, including the deceased, were shot, and 1100 Peachtree Street, where one of the victims was shot, police said.

Authorities are investigating whether there was a connection between the two locations where the shootings took place and are trying to determine whether the victims were targeted or “shot randomly.”

Police had advised locals to steer clear of the “areas between 12th St and Peachtree St NE and 15th St and W. Peachtree St NW.” Police first responded to the incident at 1:45 p.m. local time, according to a statement.
