Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine responded Sunday to the revelation that Hillary Clinton did not know that documents labeled ‘C’ were classified information by saying that it is hard to tell at times whether information is classified.
“It is difficult to know sometimes whether a statement or a paragraph is classified or not,” the Virginia senator told ABC’s Martha Raddatz, who then pointed out that Clinton had “decades” of government experience.
Kaine noted that during his time in the Senate, if information was not “specifically pulled out” and “identified in the way that it should be,” it was hard to know whether it was classified.
Clinton’s confusion over the ‘C’ marking was revealed in greater depth Friday, after the FBI released notes for its investigation into her use of a private email server.
“When asked what the parenthetical ‘C’ meant before a paragraph within the captioned email, Clinton stated she did not know and could only speculate it was referencing paragraphs marked in alphabetical order,” the report says.
While the former secretary of state had a guess about what the “C” marking meant, she wasn’t certain.
“Clinton could not say for sure if the parenthetical “C” is used for portion marking classified documents,” the report continued. “Clinton understood the top of the email is marked “Confidential” and asked the interview Agents if that was what “C” referenced.”
