West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice told singer Bette Midler to kiss his dog’s “hiney” Thursday in response to a tweet from the singer insulting his constituents last month.
The Republican’s female bulldog, named Babydog, was present at the address and lifted by Justice for the audience to see at the end of the governor’s State of the State address, which focused on the state’s successes during the COVID-19 pandemic, including an increase in tourism, according to the West Virginia Gazette.
“They told every bad joke in the world about us,” Justice said. “Babydog tells Bette Midler and all those out there [to] kiss her hiney.”

The comment came in response to Midler’s tweet on Dec. 20, 2021, calling the people of West Virginia “poor, illiterate and strung out” after Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia said he would vote against his party’s Build Back Better plan. Midler later apologized for the comment.
Midler responded to the governor’s comments Friday in a tweet claiming to show the state’s rankings for a variety of categories, including healthcare and the environment. West Virginia was ranked No. 47 overall. It wasn’t immediately clear where Midler got the information.
“Judging from these rankings, I’d say his dog’s ass would make a better Governor than him,” Midler said in the tweet.

The governor’s address took place two weeks later than planned after he tested positive for COVID-19 on Jan. 11. Justice said he was the only member of his family who tested positive.
