New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is the most unpopular governor in the country and some Democratic senators expected to have tough re-election fights in 2018 have high approval ratings, according to a new poll released Tuesday.
Christie earned the undesirable title for the first time in Morning Consult’s governor rankings. The poll showed 71 percent of Garden State residents disapprove of the job he’s doing and only 25 percent approving of his work. That’s enough to unseat Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback as the country’s most unpopular governor.
Three of the four most popular governors in the country are all Republicans in Democratic states.
Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker is the country’s most popular governor, with Bay Staters giving him a 75 percent approval rating. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Vermont Gov. Phil Scott are the other two popular Republicans in blue states.
In the Senate, Democrats are expected to have a tough mid-term election season with 25 Democrats up for re-election.
Some of the senators expected to have the most contentious races actually enjoy solid approval ratings, Morning Consult reported.
Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., has a 60 percent approval rating; West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin has a 57 percent approval rating; Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., enjoys a 53 percent approval rating; Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., has a 57 percent approval rating; Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, has a 52 percent approval rating; Sen. Bob Casey, D-Penn., has a 49 percent approval rating; and Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., has a 46 percent approval rating.
Morning Consult polled 85,000 people across the country for the poll and the margin of error varied for each state.
