Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci said he hopes Trump would stop attacking the media.
He also said the president should make appearances on CNN and MSNBC, two cable news outlets which he has long shunned.
“I wish the president and his communication teams would end the war declaration on the media,” Scaramucci said in an interview with Sirius XM’s Dean Obeidallah Tuesday.
“I think you’ve got to go on CNN, you’ve got to go on MSNBC,” he continued. “He’s a larger-than-life figure, he’s a television star. He had an award-winning, highly rated television show on a major network and he’s got a tremendous force of personality — don’t paint him into the corner of conservative news media.”
Scaramucci added that Trump must share his agenda with moderates and independents.
“Get him out there. He’s got to explain his agenda to the moderates, he’s got to explain his agenda to the independents, and he’ll win re-election resoundingly,” Scaramucci said.
Trump has mainly appeared on Fox News or Fox Business since he has assumed office, agreeing to interviews on TV elsewhere sporadically, including on CNBC in January. His last interviews with CNN and MSNBC occurred in 2016.
Trump has frequently attacked the media, particularly outlets like CNN or others that have published content critical of him. On Sunday he slammed the Washington Post on Twitter and argued the newspaper was “more fiction than fact.”
The White House hired Scaramucci in July, but he remained at his post for only 10 days. He was fired when John Kelly replaced Reince Priebus as Trump’s chief of staff, shortly after he provided a somewhat lewd interview to the New Yorker, in which he condemned then-White House chief strategist Steve Bannon.
“I’m not Steve Bannon, I’m not trying to suck my own cock,” Scaramucci said. “I’m not trying to build my own brand off the fucking strength of the president. I’m here to serve the country.”
