Trump gives up lead to Clinton in new national poll

Donald Trump has slipped six points since last month and has given up his lead in the presidential race to Hillary Clinton, according to a Fox News poll released Thursday night.

The presumptive GOP presidential nominee now trails Hillary Clinton by three points, a reversal of the three-point advantage Trump had had over Clinton in May. Clinton’s jump in the June 5-8 poll may be a result of her securing enough delegates to win the nomination on May 26.

The poll found the New York businessman has lost three points among self-identifying Republicans and 11 points among independents. But Trump is still within shooting distance of Clinton due to the poll’s three-point margin of error.

It’s also not the former secretary of state’s biggest lead in a hypothetical match-up with Trump. In March, before Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has dropped out of the Republican race, Clinton had led Trump 49 percent to 38 percent. Trump has gained support, jumping to his personal best in May, 45 percent, following the departure of his conservative rivals.

A net 57 percent of both supporters admitted there was nothing their preferred candidate could do leading up to the convention and potential general match-up in November that would cause them not to vote for him or her.
