Take 5 for Jan. 27 to 29

DC Hearts Jonathan Toubin benefit at Comet Ping Pong, Friday Last month, a taxi in Portland, Oregon, smashed into the hotel where New York DJ Jonathan Toubin slept. Toubin suffered serious injuries, and was admitted to an area hospital in critical condition.

An outpouring of support sprung forth for Toubin, with benefits in New York, Chicago, New Orleans and elsewhere.

On Friday at Comet Ping Pong, D.C. gets a chance to show its love.

“Immediately after the accident, people wanted to do a benefit,” said Comet Ping Pong booker and event organizer Sasha Lord.

Lord has known Toubin, a frequent performer in the D.C. area, including Comet Ping Pong, for a little more than two years.

Friday’s benefit will include bands Chain and the Gang, Cane and the Sticks, and Deathfix; DJs Kid Congo Powers and Baby Alcatraz; and a raffle. The cover is $10, and money collected will go to a PayPal account set up to assist Toubin.

“I’m just focused on promoting it and getting the word out,” Lord said.

Toubin has recently been released from the hospital, and is recovering. He still has long road ahead, but should get by with a little help from his friends.

“Jonathan is a really good friend to a lot of people,” Lord said. “He’s always been very generous.”
