A Minnesota man was killed by a falling redwood tree while out on a hike at the Muir Woods National Monument park in California.
The Christmas Eve death occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday when 28-year-old Subhradeep Dutta was walking on the trail path, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. First responders found Dutta’s body crushed underneath the weight of the ancient tree. He was pronounced dead at about 5 p.m.
“The subject sustained severe traumatic injuries,” a statement about the incident read. An autopsy is being conducted on Friday and an investigation into the death is underway.
Muir Woods National Monument is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which was the most popular National Parks Service site last year with more than 15 million tourists.
