Fire truck crashes on way to fire

An $800,000 Prince George?s County Fire Department ladder truck crashed in Greenbelt on Wednesday night as its crew rushed from one call to another.

Tower Unit 31, based in Beltsville, was on its way from a smoke-alert call at the GNC Store in the Greenway Shopping Center to a house fire in Berwyn Heights when it rolled onto its right side while turning left onto Greenbelt Road.

“Speed, momentum and weight were all contributing factors in the vehicle crash,” said Prince George?s County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady.

No charges have been filed in the crash and all four firefighters on board escaped injury.

The 134-foot tower-ladder truck, one of the largest pieces of equipment the department operates, rolled onto its side and slid up against a curb separating the 7500 block of Greenbelt Road from the ramp leading from northbound Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

Brady said structural damage to the vehicle seemed significant, but the extent of the damage to the truck and its equipment will not be known until after a thorough examination, which is expected to be finished next week.
