Support for impeachment rises 7% amid whistleblower complaint: Poll

In some of the first polling data since Democrats launched an impeachment inquiry into President Trump, a survey found that support for his impeachment has risen 7%.

The Morning Consult poll, conducted from Tuesday to Thursday, found that 43% of American voters believe Congress should begin impeachment proceedings to remove Trump from office, up from 36% last weekend.

The survey came during a busy week in Washington, D.C. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Tuesday a formal impeachment inquiry into the president; on Wednesday, the White House released a transcript of a phone call that is at the center of the whistleblower complaint; and on Thursday, the complaint was made public, buttressed by acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire’s testimony before the House Intelligence Committee.

The survey found that support for impeachment is still widely unpopular among Republicans but has doubled from 5% to 10% support since the weekend. Among Democrats, support for the drastic move grew from 66% to 79% support.

The complaint alleges that Trump improperly pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate political opponent Joe Biden. The identity of the whistleblower is not yet known, although he reportedly works for the CIA and was detailed to the White House.

Trump has pushed back on claims that he committed any wrongdoing and described the phone call at the center of the complaint as “perfect.”
