Theresa May promises to step down as British prime minister ahead of 2022 elections

British Prime Minister Theresa May says she will be step down as Conservative Party leader before the next scheduled national election, in 2022.

“I think it is right that another party leader takes us into that general election,” May said when arriving at the European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

A no-confidence vote Wednesday night failed 117-200, which was triggered largely by Conservative Party’s discontent over May’s handling of Brexit negotiations.

May survived the no-confidence vote, the AP noted, after telling lawmakers in a private meeting that she would step down in 2022 and hand over power to a new Conservative leader before the elections.

EU leaders say the Brexit deal reached with May was the only one they would agree to. The leaders say they will not reopen negotiations.
