A day after President Trump nicknamed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “Rocket Man,” a Republican lawmaker says he thinks the president’s sense of humor will help lighten the mood among “stuffy” diplomats at the United Nations.
“The president does have a sense of humor. ‘Rocket man,’ I thought, poking at Kim Jong Un in a pretty funny way to get under his skin,” Rep. Chris Collins said on CNN’s “New Day” on Monday.
When asked if Trump’s comments establish “the stature” the president wants at his first UN General Assembly this week, Collins said “most” of the diplomats in the room “are pretty stuffy.”
“They’re all hung up on protocol, who shakes whose hand first and what line do you stand in? President Trump doesn’t stand on protocol at all. Whether it’s the way he interacts with crowds and calls people up on stage. He’s just a fun guy. He really is. If anyone would get to know him. I think the stuffy diplomats at the UN will be taken aback a bit.”
Trump dubbed the North Korean leader “Rocket Man” after a call with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
“I spoke with President Moon of South Korea last night. Asked him how Rocket Man is doing. Long gas lines forming in North Korea. Too bad!” Trump tweeted Sunday.
