Cornyn: Dems ‘last gasp’ to block Gorsuch will fail

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said Democrats will fail in their “last gasp” try to prevent Judge Neil Gorsuch from being appointed to the Supreme Court, and in the end he will be confirmed “one way or another.”

“This is their last gasp from trying to prevent him from being confirmed,” Cornyn said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” referring to threats of a Democratic filibuster to block Gorsuch’s confirmation on the Senate floor this week.

“But they won’t, and Judge Gorsuch will be confirmed this week one way or another,” said Cornyn, who is the Republican senator in charge of whipping votes in the Senate.

Some are still undecided about how they will vote. Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine told “Face the Nation” on Sunday that he is still attempting to figure out which way he will vote this week when the Gorsuch nomination comes to the floor.

“I haven’t decided yet,” he said. “To be honest I have focused almost exclusively on the Russia matter” that the Senate Intelligence Committee is taking up on Russian tampering with the U.S. election, he explained.

“I went to a part of Neil Gorsuch’s hearings, I’ve met with him, I’ve read a number of his opinions, [and] done a lot of homework. But I’m not making a decision until next week,” King said.
