Pelosi explains why Dems have struggled to attract white men

Democrats have struggled to attract white men because of guns, gays and God, Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi declared in an interview late Wednesday.

“So many times white, non-college educated white males have voted Republican,” Pelosi told PBS. “They voted against their own economic interests because of guns, because of gays, and because of God.”

“The three ‘G’s,” Pelosi explained. “God being women’s right to choose. That is softening. Some of those people were never going to be voting Democratic anyway, but I believe that with the turnout that we expect to have we will draw some of them in with our message and enough other people to win the election.”

Pundits were quick to observe the similarity between Pelosi’s comments and a statement President Obama made during his first campaign in 2008. Talking about the same demographic, Obama said, “It’s not surprising … they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
