Trump says he never asked Kasich to be veep

Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he never asked John Kasich to serve as his vice president, contradicting earlier reports in the New York Times.

“John Kasich was never asked by me to be V.P. Just arrived in Cleveland — will be a great two days!” Trump tweeted on Wednesday afternoon.

The New York Times wrote earlier on Wednesday that Donald Trump Jr. had asked one of Kasich’s advisers if the Ohio governor would like to be the “most powerful vice president” in history, saying that Trump’s veep will be in charge of both foreign and domestic policy while Trump focuses on “making America great again.”

Trump ended up picking Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, who is expected to speak Wednesday night in Cleveland at the Republican National Convention, as his running mate.

Kasich, who ended his bid for the Republican presidential nomination in May, is not attending the convention this week and has not endorsed Trump.
