NEW YORK (AP) — The High Line is marking its fifth anniversary of providing one of New York City’s more unusual public spaces: a park in a former freight rail line above Manhattan’s streets.
The Friends of the High Line group is hosting a pie social Monday evening to mark the occasion.
The High Line runs for nearly two miles through Manhattan’s meatpacking district and Chelsea neighborhoods. It uses an old elevated rail track that hasn’t had trains running since 1980.
The first section of the park opened in June 2009, and a second phase two years later.
Over the last five years, more than 2,000 tours, 400 school field trips and countless other visitors have taken in the High Line. It also has provided a platform for more than 70 public art projects.
