Stimulus update: Millions could still be eligible for COVID-19 stimulus payments

Millions of people nationwide could still be eligible for COVID-19 stimulus payments, but time is running out for those seeking to claim financial relief.

Between 8 and 9 million people are potentially eligible for a COVID-19 stimulus payment or Child Tax Credit, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

Families with little to no income, which therefore do not pay taxes, have until Nov. 15 to complete simplified tax returns to see whether they are eligible for payments. Taxpayers who missed the April 15 deadline have until Oct. 17 to submit their tax returns.

From April 2020 to December 2021, $931 billion from the federal government was devoted to providing direct COVID-19 stimulus payments to people, and Congress approved three waves of payments for close to 165 million people.

A person with an income below $75,000, or married couples making $150,000 or less, would be eligible for all three payments in full.

Most people with children were automatically eligible for the Child Tax Credit. From July to December 2021, 84% of U.S. children benefited from the credits, which aimed to reduce financial hardship and food insecurity.
