Georgetown men’s soccer team wasn’t happy about being left out of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s preseason rankings. Despite not receiving a single vote, coach Brian Wiese reminded his players, “Don’t worry about the polls.”
This week the undefeated Hoyas (10-0-1) became higher ranked than ever before, No. 3 in the country, and Wiese’s message hasn’t changed. Georgetown must put its best start and longest unbeaten streak in program history on the line against No. 2 Connecticut (9-0-1) at North Kehoe Field on Wednesday.
The Hoyas were unexpectedly denied an NCAA tournament berth last season, one year after the program’s first appearance since 1997. This year they’ve been led in scoring by freshman Brandon Allen (eight goals, two assists), who has six game-winning goals. Eight of Georgetown’s victories have come by a one-goal margin.
After the Huskies, Georgetown’s path to the postseason doesn’t get any easier, with matches on the road at No. 10 Notre Dame (8-2) and at home vs. No. 9 Marquette (10-0) still to come. All four teams are in the same Big East division.
