Pelosi asks Ryan for cost and details of healthcare proposal

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is demanding the House GOP produce a price tag and other details about their proposal to replace Obamacare before it receives consideration.

“The American people and members have a right to know the full impact of this legislation before any vote in committee or by the whole House,” Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a letter sent Tuesday to House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis.

Pelosi is calling on the GOP to supply the cost of the bill as well as details about benefits that would be required under the proposal and how many people would be covered.

Democrats said they believe the plan will leave more people uninsured than Obamacare and that it will cost more money than the current healthcare law.

Pelosi was a main architect of Obamacare and continues to staunchly defend it despite the law’s collapsing health care market and skyrocketing premiums and deductibles.

Pelosi also wants the GOP to calculate the impact on state budgets of their proposal to turn Medicaid into a block grant system and how the plan would preserve or harm Medicare’s solvency.

Republicans have not yet produced a price tag for the measure they introduced on Monday and have not said specifically that their proposal would cover as many people as Obamacare.

Pelosi said there are “critical questions” about the details that should be answered before two House committees mark up the legislation this week.

“The GOP legislation will have life or death consequences for tens of millions of families across America, and extraordinary impacts on state and federal budgets long into the future,” Pelosi said.
