Trump says he is ‘inclined’ to delay G-7 summit until after 2020 election

President Trump said the G-7 summit of world leaders may not take place until after the November election.

Trump noted on Monday that he has not sent out invitations to world leaders for the gathering. He said that he would prefer to have the conference take place later in the year after most recently postponing the event until September.

“I am much more inclined to do it sometime after the election. We were going to do it in September. They’d like to do it. We could do it through teleconference, or we could do it through a meeting, but I sort of am now suggesting — I told my people yesterday actually, why don’t we do it sometime after the election when things are a little bit, you have a little more time to think about it because it’s very important. The G-7 is very important,” he said.

Trump said he would consider inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin but noted that he had not finalized the list of attendees.

“We have invited a number of people to the meeting. I certainly would invite [Putin] to the meeting. I think he is an important factor, but we will invite certain people that aren’t in the G-7. Some people have already accepted, but we’re going to be doing it after the election. I think it’s a better atmosphere to have a G-7. I think it’s just a better, calmer atmosphere to have a G-7,” he said.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused several postponements for the annual conference, which was set to take place in the United States this year.
