Did a U.S.-based mosquito just spread Zika in Florida?

Florida is investigating a possible new case of Zika that wasn’t caused by travel outside the U.S., raising speculation that it could be the first case of mosquitoes spreading the virus within U.S. borders.

The Florida Department of Health is investigating a possible non-travel-related case of Zika in Miami-Dade County, according to reports from multiple local news outlets. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is assisting in the investigation.

So far there are more than 1,000 cases in the U.S., but almost all are from people who got the virus from another country or territory. Zika is primarily spread via mosquito bites, but mosquitoes haven’t been spreading the virus within the continental U.S.

There are a small amount of cases of sexual transmission.
