Hillary Clinton argued Monday that racism and sexism played a part in persuading some voters to reject her and back President Trump in the 2016 election.
Clinton’s comments came after she was asked by India Today editor Aroon Purie over the weekend if Trump was merely the symptom or the disease that has caused things to go “wrong” in America at an event in Mumbai, India. She said racism and sexism played a big role.
“I won the places that are optimistic, diverse, dynamic, moving forward, and his whole campaign, ‘Make America Great Again,’ was looking backwards,” she said. “You know, you didn’t like black people getting rights, you don’t like women, you know, getting jobs, you don’t want to you know see that Indian-American succeeding more than you are, whatever your problem is, I’m going to solve it.’”
She pointed out she won the states on the coasts and in Illinois, and said those areas represent a majority of America’s gross domestic product.
“If you look at the map of the United States, there’s all that red in the middle where Trump won,” Clinton said.
When the host suggested that countries “deserve the government they get,” Clinton disagreed.
“I would have to say, no, we did not deserve that,” she said.
