Kamala Harris’s husband Douglas Emhoff to join Georgetown Law faculty

Douglas Emhoff, the lawyer husband of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, won’t be idle as the country’s first second gentleman.

Emhoff will teach and research entertainment and media law at Georgetown University, law school Dean William Treanor announced in a statement Thursday. He’ll start in the spring semester.

“I’ve long wanted to teach and serve the next generation of young lawyers,” Emhoff said in his own statement. “I couldn’t be more excited to join the Georgetown community.”

Emhoff took leave from his partnership at DLA Piper so he could join his wife on the campaign trail after President-elect Joe Biden tapped her as his running mate. He announced his departure from the firm shortly after the Nov. 3 election. He started with DLA Piper in 2017 after stints with other firms, including launching his own with partner Ben Whitwell in 2000.

Emhoff’s career decision follows a precedent set by incoming first lady Jill Biden.

As second lady, Biden taught English and writing at Northern Virginia Community College. She was the first wife of a sitting vice president to hold down a paying job. She’s indicated she’s likely to do the same when she and Joe Biden move into the White House in January.
