Democratic congresswoman says GOP opposes anti-Semitism because ‘they are looking for our donors’

Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan claimed that Republicans only denounce anti-Semitism so they can sway Jews to donate to them.

Slotkin, who is Jewish herself, made the remark at a Jewish Democratic summer conference on Sunday.

“There has been a lot of discussion for the past nine months or so, eight months, about anti-Semitism,” Slotkin stated, according to the Washington Free Beacon. “We have what I believe is a full-on attempt by the Republican Party to grab a different community and bring them into the fold — and I will just be very honest, right — they are not looking for our votes, because we are a relatively small community. They are looking for our donors, right? They are looking for our donors, and they are trying to sway us.”

Back in March, the freshman congresswoman spoke in favor of the blanket House resolution condemning all bigotry, which began as a condemnation of Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar’s comments alleging that some members of Congress have a dual allegiance to both Israel and the U.S.

“I think people feel the need to be very clear about what we mean by anti-Semitism, how it affects us, and that there’s just such a dramatic increase in anti-Semitism in events, in violent events, that we just feel the need to be vocal about it,” Slotkin told The Detroit News at the time, and added that Jewish members might write a separate resolution, though no such resolution came to the House floor.
