Leopold: Let cops earn extra income

Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold will introduce legislation to remove a ban on county police officers working specific part-time jobs.

The emergency bill would allow officers to work in places that have liquor licenses, which many officers do for extra money during off-duty hours. Bars and taverns would be excluded, but entertainment venues and restaurants would be allowed.

“Secondary employment by police officers not only provides much needed supplemental income, but also increases police presence in the community to help deter crime,” Leopold said in a written statement.

The bill?s emergency status allows it go into effect 10 days after approval by the County Council.

The county Ethics Commission recently ruled that officers working at businesses with liquor licenses was a conflict of interest.
