Virginia voters get robocall from Trump vouching for Ed Gillespie

A robocall from President Trump to Virginia voters Tuesday urged them to vote for Republican Ed Gillespie in the state’s gubernatorial election instead of his Democratic opponent Ralph Northam.

“If you let Ralph Northam be governor, he will be a total disaster to your state,” Trump says in the recorded message. “Northam is weak on crime and weak on immigration and, as your lieutenant governor, Northam has driven your economy right into a ditch, and he didn’t even show up to the most important meetings. He was always missing and nowhere to be found.”

Trump goes on to say that Washington has made progress and lauded the state of the economy and employment numbers, noting that Gillespie would do the same for the state of Virginia.

“Ed will protect your family from crime, drugs, and violence — something Northam will never do,” he says. “And Ed loves the vets, loves the military, and loves your Second Amendment.”

“With your help, Ed will help make America great again, a phrase that I like a lot,” Trump says in closing. “Vote for Ed Gillespie.”

Trump shared similar support for Gillespie this week on Twitter.

Northam has about a 3-point advantage over Gillespie, according to the RealClearPolitics average of polls conducted this past week. However, this is within the margin of error in some of the polls. Polls for the gubernatorial election close on Tuesday night.

Trump’s call was paid for by the Republican Party of Virginia.
