Donald Trump said Wednesday that he wants the Republican Party to unite around him, but said he doesn’t need endorsements from Republicans who were “nasty” to him during the campaign.
“I’ve been saying for a long time that there’s some people that I almost don’t want their endorsement, Republicans, I really don’t, because it was too rough and they were too nasty, and I don’t think it’s going to matter, frankly. It’s going to be me,” Trump said in a phone interview on MSNBC.
According to the billionaire businessman, he’s gotten many calls in recent weeks “from people who were far more brutal than Ted” but now want to join his campaign “immediately.”
“I said to them, ‘How can you do that after what you said?’ They said, ‘don’t worry about, it’s not a problem,’ because they’re politicians. It’s talk,” Trump added.
When asked whether Ted Cruz might endorse him, he said, “I think it would be nice.”
He made similar comments on NBC earlier in the day.
Trump’s comments come the day after a decisive win in the Indiana primary, which has all but officially made him the GOP nominee. He has since made calls for the party to unite behind him to win the general election.
