Florida’s Republican Attorney General Pam Bondi rejected questions from CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Tuesday about whether she can fairly represent the gay community because she opposes same-sex marriage.
Cooper, who is gay, asked Bondi whether it is “hypocritical to portray yourself as a champion of the gay community,” but Bondi dismissed that idea.
“I’ve never said I don’t like gay people. That’s ridiculous,” Bondi said. She also said she was “sworn in to uphold the state constitution, the ban was part of it” after being repeatedly pressed by Anderson.
The interview turned heated as Cooper demanded she defend her previous record in light of the tragedy.
Cooper said he has “never really seen you talk about gays and lesbians and transgender people in a positive way until now.”
“The only thing I am championing is human beings’ lives that were lost,” responded Bondi, who said we should focus on the victims and their families.
