Incumbent NY lawmakers facing primaries next week

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — One of New York’s Senate leaders faces a primary challenge next week along with 27 other incumbents seeking another two-year term in the state Legislature.

Sen. Jeff Klein is in a Democratic primary against Oliver Koppell, an ex-assemblyman, attorney general and City Council member. Klein heads the five-member Independent Democratic Conference.

The race to represent the district that includes parts of the Bronx and Westchester County could help determine which party controls the Senate.

The Board of Elections lists 21 contested Senate primaries, including 12 incumbent senators from the 63-seat chamber.

In the 150-seat Assembly, there will be 32 primaries, with 16 incumbents.

The part-time Legislature usually meets a few days each week from January to June. It pays $79,500.
