Governor, wife say they?ll miss staff, not office

Gov. Robert Ehrlich and his wife, Kendel, told reporters today that what they?ll miss most are the people surrounded them at Government House, the governor?s residence, and their senior staff and Cabinet officials.

“We never allowed the trappings to trap us,” Ehrlich said, referring to the house, with its staff of chefs, butlers, maids and state troopers providing drivers and security. He confirmed that the couple and their two sons will move into a house outside Annapolis, partly to keep son Drew in the same local school. The governor said he and Kendel have a strong attraction to Annapolis; they met when both worked there and were married there.

“You can?t predict the future in life,” said Kendel, a lawyer who once broke off with her future husband because she couldn?t see herself involved in politics. Her priorities now are “getting my family organized and on the right track,” she said.

Kendel Ehrlich said she had given a tour of the executive mansion to incoming first lady Catherine Curran O?Malley, the district court judge married to Gov.-elect Martin O?Malley. She said she showed her the house and “how it operates,” including the private quarters on the third and fourth floors the public never sees. She said her advice to Judge O?Malley was “to do whatever she thinks is right for her family.”
