Video shows driver hitting protester in George Floyd demonstration

Police are looking into a video of a woman who appeared to turn her vehicle around purposefully to hit a protester in Denver, Colorado, during a George Floyd demonstration.

The video, posted on Twitter by a witness of the incident, shows a man on the hood of a car being driven through a group of people. The witness claimed he was on the hood of the car because the driver “wouldn’t stop accelerating toward the people surrounding her car.”

After the man jumped off the car, a woman in the crowd could be heard yelling “watch out” as the driver turned the car around and hit the man.

The man got up and seemed to be unharmed as other protesters attempted to chase after the car.

A spokesperson for the Denver Police Department said they do not know the identity of the driver or the person who was hit.

“Tonight is a very sad night for our state. While we are still uncovering all of the facts about what took place, a protest regarding the killing of George Floyd devolved into vandalism and violence,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement. He added that he was “absolutely shocked by video evidence of a motorist attempting to run over a protestor.”

“Coloradans are better than this. I share the immense anguish we all feel about the unjust murder of George Floyd. But let me be clear: Senseless violence will never be healed by more violence,” said Polis.

“We wanted a peaceful protest,” the witness said on Twitter. “Everyone had walked away from the car, and she purposely turned around and ran him over.”
