Sanders ‘excited’ to debate Trump

In a speech to supporters, Bernie Sanders made it sound like a debate with Donald Trump before California’s June 7 primary was a done deal.

“We asked Donald Trump if he’d be prepared to debate and it appears that Donald Trump is prepared to debate,” Sanders triumphantly told supporters at an outdoor rally in Ventura, Calif., on Thursday. “I’m very excited about it and I think we’re going to have to rent out the biggest stadium you have here in California.”

The Sanders campaign has been putting pressure on Trump to debate since the presumptive Republican nominee threw out the idea on Jimmy Kimmel Wednesday night. Although the Trump campaign has yet to confirm, Sanders sounded confident it would happen.

The Vermont senator told supporters he was “excited” to ask Trump about why he wants to give tax breaks to the wealthy and why he doesn’t want to raise the minimum wage, but mostly he wanted to press Trump about his past comments about Mexicans, Muslims, women and veterans.

Sanders added, “So I thank Mr. Trump for agreeing to debate I look forward to it, I look forward to defeating him and becoming the Democratic nominee.”

Although Sanders and Trump will meet on the debate stage in California, at this point it is mathematically impossible for Sanders to overtake Hillary Clinton in the nominating process. But, despite the odds, Sanders said that his campaign is better positioned than ever to win the general election and he is “increasingly confident that we will.”
