Nikolas Cruz, the man suspected of fatally shooting 17 people at a South Florida high school in February, has been accused of attacking a guard Wednesday morning inside the jail where he is awaiting trial, according to a local report.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office told NBC 6 the 20-year-old was involved in an incident with a detention deputy at Broward County Jail. The unnamed deputy was injured, though it’s not clear how Cruz may have attacked the law enforcement officer.
Cruz was charged Wednesday morning with two felony counts of aggravated assault and battery on an officer. He was also charged with one count of use of a chemical or electrical weapon on an officer, which is also a felony, according to NBC 6.
The alleged incident was reported to have taken place during an event where the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School commission was scheduled to meet with Broward schools superintendent Robert Runcie, Sheriff Scott Israel, and school resource officer Scot Peterson.
Cruz was previously charged with 34 counts for crimes related to the February shooting in Parkland, Fla. He pleaded not guilty. Cruz was formerly a student at the school, but had been expelled.
