Clinton praises London’s first Muslim mayor

Hillary Clinton congratulated Sadiq Khan Sunday for becoming London’s first Muslim mayor.

The Democratic presidential front-runner hailed the Labour Party member as a “champion of workers’ rights and human rights.”

“Son of a Pakistani bus driver, champion of workers’ rights and human rights, and now Mayor of London. Congrats, @SadiqKhan. -H,” the Democratic candidate tweeted on Saturday. Clinton’s message did not make any mention of Khan’s religion.

Khan defeated Tory Zac Goldsmith on Friday by a tally of 1,310,143 votes to 994,614 votes, according to the BBC.

Late last year Khan said he hoped Republican front-runner Donald Trump “loses badly” after the billionaire businessman recommended a ban on Muslims entering the U.S. Trump’s remarks about Khan described Trump’s remarks about Muslims as “divisive and outrageous.”

Clinton, along with other Democrats and Republicans, also condemned Trump’s suggested ban. “This is reprehensible, prejudiced and divisive. @RealDonaldTrump, you don’t get it. This makes us less safe,” she tweeted in December.
