CNN’s Chris Cuomo Botches Abortion Report, Helps Spread Misinformation

The controversy over Carly Fiorina’s comments at the last GOP debate about seeing a video of an aborted fetus with its legs kicking is still raging. Earlier today, David Daleiden, the journalist behind the Center for Medical Progress’s undercover Planned Parenthood investigation that produced the video Fiorina was describing, went on CNN to discuss the matter.

Right off the bat, host Chris Cuomo is confrontational with Daleiden and accusing him of lying. Daleiden, understandably, seems momentarily confused by Cuomo’s hostility and ignorance of the video in question before realizing what’s going on. The full video of Cuomo and Daleiden’s segment can be seen here, but here’s a transcript of the first part of the exchange:

Cuomo: Carly Fiorina very passionately in the debate, very cogently, brings across this image of an aborted baby on the table, the heart beating, the legs kicking, the legs moving, look at that video and tell me what you think. Let me ask you about that image. Is that an aborted fetus that’s in that image?
Daleiden: You know, I actually in the studio, don’t have a visual of what you’re showing me, so I’m not…
Cuomo: You know what I’m talking about, David. It’s a miscarriage. The mother was interviewed, you know you didn’t ask her for permission for it, but that’s beside the point. It is not what Carly Fiorina describes it as.
Daleiden: That’s not what Carly Fiorina was referencing. Carly Fiorina was referencing the sequence in our video that shows footage of a born alive infant from a late-term abortion actually moving in a specimen pan while Holly O’Donnell who used to work at StemExpress is talking about the harvesting of a brain of an infant of the exact same gestational age.
Cuomo: So you think it’s a different image?

Because it is apparently too much to ask journalists to do some basic preparation involving one of the most discussed stories of the week, here’s the explanation of what’s going on. In the video that Fiorina is describing — the same video that many supposed journalists described as “pure fiction,” said “didn’t exist,” and claimed was “totally made up” — there are two different babies. If you watch the video, and Cuomo clearly hasn’t, about 5:56 in the gruesome scene is there just as Fiorina and Daleiden describe it. Later in the same video, there’s a still picture of baby that died as a result of a miscarriage. These are two different babies, and you would know it if you simply watched the video, which is something that many journalists refuse to do even as they have no problem commenting on the veracity of the video and Fiorina’s remarks about it.

So, again, it’s obvious Cuomo didn’t watch the video, and if I were a betting man, I’d say he pulled his erroneous talking points straight from the house organ of a liberal think tank. As for the source of the video of the born alive infant dying in a specimen pan, the The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, the organization gave the film of the dying infant to Daleiden’s Center for Medical Progress, gave a statement to The Federalist over a week ago confirming that the footage is in fact of an aborted fetus:

The video clip we provided to CMP depicted an intact delivery abortion. It was filmed at an abortion clinic. It was not a miscarriage. Mothers don’t go to abortion clinics to miscarry. Had this case been a miscarriage, the mother would have presented at a hospital and her baby would have been rushed to an Isolette for appropriate neonatal care — not abandoned to writhe and eventually expire in a cold, stainless steel specimen vessel. As regards the organizational affiliation of the abortion facility in which this termination was performed, our access agreements forbid the disclosure of any information which might tend to identify the relevant clinics or personnel with whom we work. Preserving confidentiality is vital to future clinic access. I can, however, assure you that the footage in question is not anomalous. It is representative of the frequent outcomes of many late term intact delivery terminations performed at clinics of all organizational affiliations.

Despite not having his facts straight, Cuomo had no compunction arrogantly beginning his interview by accusing David Daleiden of lying. Cuomo backed down when he realized he was out of his depth, but this is really inexcusable and uncharitable behavior. And now, because of Cuomo’s terrible interview pro-choice activists have seized on the confusion created to (again) completely misrepresent the video and what David Daleiden said about it. Misinformation about Daleiden supposedly admitting the baby was a miscarriage — he did not — is raging across social media. Here’s what Google search results look like right now, thanks to one ignorant journalist. Every single one of these reports is both wrong and predicated on Cuomo’s incompetence, and it would nice if Cuomo and CNN felt some responsibility for correcting this misinformation:
