Freedom Caucus seeks answers from Trump

The most conservative wing of House Republicans plans to meet privately with Donald Trump’s representatives in the weeks ahead.

“We have actually been in discussions with one of his representatives about meeting with our board,” Louisiana Rep. John Fleming, a key member of the House Freedom Caucus, said Wednesday. “We plan to meet with them in the near future.”

Fleming said conservatives are still wary of Trump, who has a habit of flip-flopping on his policy positions, including minimum wage, abortion and national defense.

“Many of us have questions about what Trump’s positions really are,” Fleming said. “He states different positions at different times. We want to make sure we are on board with each other.”

Fleming was among the Republicans who met privately Tuesday morning with House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis. Ryan will hold a closed-door conference with Trump on Thursday that will include other GOP leaders and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.

Ryan has so far refused to back Trump, echoing the doubts of many in the Republican conference who fear Trump does not sincerely embrace conservative principles.

“The question becomes, at what point do we unify?” Fleming said. “We are going to have to build a platform for our convention.”

The Freedom Caucus comprises about 40 of the most conservative GOP lawmakers who frequently buck the leadership on spending and social policy issues.
