Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said Friday that Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is rooted in bigotry.
Asked about the Trump campaign saying the GOP nominee now believes President Obama was born in America, Sanders grew frustrated on CNN.
“This is pathetic,” Sanders told CNN. “And this goes to the root of what Trump’s campaign is about. And let’s be clear, it’s about bigotry.”
Trump has heaped praise on Sanders’ stance on trade during the Democratic presidential primary, in an effort to court Sanders voters that are turned off by Hillary Clinton’s nomination. If Trump wins the presidency, the socialist senator said he would “try to overcome my depression and then figure out where we go from there.”
Sanders will campaign with Democratic senate candidate Katie McGinty in Pittsburgh, Penn., on Friday.
