A 75-year-old Springfield man was killed in an apparent homicide and police say his son is considered missing.

Fairfax County police said officers responded to a report of a shooting at a home on the 7600 block of Chancellor Way at about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

They found Gary P. Hanson dead inside, police said. Authorities are looking for his son, 53-year-old Richard Hanson, who also lives at the home and is considered a missing person.

Officer Shelley Broderick, a Fairfax County police spokeswoman, said Richard Hanson is not considered a suspect in his father’s death.

Police don’t have a description of a suspect in the homicide. Broderick said no one else was at the home when the incident happened, but other family members were present when officers arrived.

Someone inside the home called police to report the shooting, Broderick said. She said she didn’t know who made the phone call.

Richard Hanson is considered an “endangered” missing adult for medical reasons, police said. Broderick said she could not elaborate on the medical issues, citing privacy laws. She would not say if Richard Hanson is believed to also have been injured in the shooting.

Richard Hanson was last seen Tuesday.

Police said he might be driving a 1998 green, four-door Saturn. The car has the Virginia license plate KLG-2406.
