President Trump was “surprised” by Attorney General William Barr’s announcement that a criminal investigation into former President Barack Obama or former Vice President Joe Biden probably won’t happen.
On Monday, Barr said that U.S. Attorney John Durham was unlikely to conduct a criminal probe into Obama or Biden as part of his investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation and decisions made by top law enforcement officials after Trump was elected. During a press conference on Monday, the president said he was surprised by Barr’s announcement.
“I’m surprised because Obama knew everything that was happening … I think Obama and Biden knew about it. They were participants, but, so I’m a little surprised by that statement,” he said.
“If it was me, I guarantee they’d be going after me. In [Obama’s case], they’re not. So, I think it’s just a continuation of a double standard,” he later added. “I’m surprised by it.”
Trump noted that Barr hedged his remarks by saying that it was “based on the information I have today” and that Durham may make a different decision later in the investigation.
“We have an honorable attorney general. He’s going to do an honorable job,” he said.
