Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, predicted Thursday that House Democrats are likely to start impeachment proceedings against President Trump during the next Congress.
“In the House, I think the Democrats have unleashed some of the angriest voices on the Left,” Cruz told students during an address at George Washington University according to the NTK Network. “I think we’re going to see two years of investigations, of subpoenas, and we may well see impeachment.”
Cruz said “anger and rage” were evident in the 2018 midterm elections and will likely be a force during the 2020 presidential cycle. But he said those sentiments corrode democracy and will “paralyze” lawmakers on Capitol Hill, particularly because of the division of power among the political parties between the House and the Senate.
“I think that anger and rage is going to have to burn out some more before we can come together and enact major legislative reforms like we should be doing,” Cruz said.
Cruz, a 2016 Republican presidential candidate, defeated Texas Democratic Senate candidate Rep. Beto O’Rourke this month in their high-profile race to represent the traditionally red state in the upper chamber.
