President Trump said Monday he would announce his nominee to succeed Nikki Haley as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations sometime this week.
“I will announce before the end of the week,” he said when asked about Haley’s replacement. Haley announced last month she would be departing her diplomatic post by the end of the year.
According to reports, Heather Nauert, the State Department spokeswoman, is Trump’s top choice to serve as ambassador to the U.N., and some say she has already been offered the nomination. The president told reporters last week that he had not offered Nauert the job, but said the former Fox News reporter is “under very serious consideration.”
“She’s been with us a long time,” Trump said then. “She’s been a supporter for a long time.”
Nauert now serves as the acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs at the State Department.
Others believed to be in the running for the post are U.S. Ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft and U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell.
Dina Powell, the former deputy national security adviser, was considered to be an early front-runner for the U.N. job, but she was dropped from the short list last month.
