Trump shares personal cellphone number with world leaders and Twitter melts down

Social media erupted with memes, GIFs and riffs after news broke Tuesday that President Trump encourages world leaders to call him on his personal cellphone number.

According to the Associated Press, Trump urged leaders of Canada and Mexico to call him on his personal cellphone number — an offer that so far, only Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has capitalized on.

Trump also shared his cellphone number with French President Emmanual Macron after the two spoke following Macron’s victory in the French election.

News that the president gave out his cellphone number was met with criticism and called a “notable breach of protocol,” particularly in the diplomatic arena where leader-to-leader calls are planned in advance and occur over secure phone lines.

But the revelation was also met with a bit of comedy as social media users poked fun at Trump.

“Why is Trump giving world leaders his cell number when he can just summon their astral presences with the Orb?” Washington Post reporter Dave Weigel wrote on Twitter, referencing the president’s trip to Saudi Arabia last week.

“TRUMP: Hello, this is Donald Trump’s cellphone MERKEL [disguising her voice]: Hello, this is THE ORB,” another writer said.

“Justin Trudeau is just sitting there with Trump’s cellphone number going ‘nah,'” said one Twitter user.

“TRUMP: ‘Hey Vlad! I’m glad we exchanged numbers. Call me any time.’ PUTIN: ‘New phone, who dis?'” Ben Howe, a contributing editor at Redstate wrote.

“Can’t wait til Angela Merkel calls Donald Trump’s cellphone to ask if his refrigerator’s running,” one Twitter user said.

“Maybe #Covfefe is Trump’s cellphone number? Or the password he uses for the service that buys his Twitter followers?” another user said, referencing Trump’s tweet late Tuesday night mentioning the word “covfefe.”

Others used the news to reference Drake’s music video for “Hotline Bling,” which Trump parodied during an appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in 2015.
